Friday Fun (8/22)

We celebrated the end of our first week of school with some Friday popsicles.

Sylvia's First Day of 1st Grade

Sylvia headed off to her first day of 1st Grade on August 19th.  She was excited to get back to school but not quite ready for summer to be over.  Her friend, Sophia, from kindergarten was a friendly face in her new classroom.

Kindergarten Graduation

Sylvia finished off her year in kindergarten with a graduation ceremony on the last day of school.  The kids made and decorated mortar boards for the celebration.  That morning they sang a few heart wrenching songs, received a diploma from Principal Cannon and we watched a picture slide show of all the wonderful activities that filled their first year.

The kids returned to their classroom after the celebration and we presented Ms. Jensen with her end of the year / retirement gift from the kids.  Each child painted a flower that was then framed together to make a garden picture.

They ended the day by giving the teachers high fives and dancing to Happy as they headed out of the school for the last time as kindergartners.

Kindergarten Picnic

The Horn kindergartners took a walking field trip to Kiwanis Park to celebrate the end of the school year.  I joined them for the walk and Grandma and Grandpa brought the boys over to join us.  The kids enjoyed picnic lunches, lots and lots of playtime, group pictures and popsicles.

kindergarten share day

Sylvia's kindergarten class had a share day at the end of the year.  Each child got to bring something from home to share with the class.  Sylvia chose Scotts and was very excited to have a new special leash to take him to school with.

Club Invention

I was given the opportunity to get back in the classroom a bit this spring.  Horn hosted a Club Invention school class and I was the 1st - 3rd grade teacher on Tuesday afternoons.  In eight weeks we completed a unit called Castles, Catapults and Coat of Arms.  The students and I explored The Dark Ages, buoyancy and a few simple machines.  Sylvia was able to join me and enjoyed the majority of it although it made for a full day.  A big thanks also goes out to Grandma and Nana for watching the boys, a good friend and fellow PTO member for doing the leg work and getting the class going, the wonderful parents who volunteered in my classroom and my hubby.  Dan helped me in multiple ways from finding a Bill Nye the Science Guy video for me so I could try to understand pulleys to making levers for me to use in class.

Friday Fun (4/18)

We picked up some free "birthday" cupcakes (using Sylvia's HyVee coupon that we misplaced back in November).  Both boys fell asleep on the way to HyVee so my big girl went into the store all on her own to pick out cupcakes and "buy" them.  She was very brave and proud, knowing that if she hadn't gone in we wouldn't have had cupcakes (I wasn't about to wake sleeping boys).  We enjoyed the cupcakes at church before heading in to watch a Veggie Tales movie.

Whether the weather be hot...

Kindergarten students at Horn entertained their families this spring at their music performance.  They have been practicing so hard during music class with Mrs. Hagan and their hard work showed.  I was impressed with how well organized it was and that each students got to do something special like play an instrument or use the parachute.  Sylvia asked a me a few weeks before the performance if I wanted to hear the songs or if she should keep them a secret for the concert.  I left it up to her and she immediately started singing them!  She followed Mrs. Hagan's wardrobe requests and picked out her own outfit that day.

Sylvia's big smile shows how much she loves her homeroom teacher, Ms. Jensen and how excited she was about the spring concert.  We sure are going to miss kindergarten

Friday Fun (3/7/2014)

I took the kids to HyVee for Friday fun day.  Eric picked out his free birthday cupcakes and a HyVee employee also gave the kids free cookies (that we saved for later).  Drake slept through the cupcake eating so he got to have a cookie while we did our grocery shopping.

Friday Fun (2/21/2014)

lots of fruit and cookies...like The Very Hungry Caterpillar

The Very Hungry Caterpillar

Daddy and Eric went on a date to see The Very Hungry Caterpillar and Other Eric Carle Favorites by the Mermaid Theatre of Nova Scotia.  Their friends, John and Hayden went along too.  The boys had a great time although they may have gotten a little tired by the end of the show.  Eric's favorite part was when the demonstrated how everything worked at the end of the show.  Sylvia's kindergarten class also got to see the show during a field trip.  I tagged along as a volunteer.  It was a black light puppet show of Eric Carle's Little Cloud, The Mixed Up Chameleon and The Very Hungry Caterpillar.  You can check out the performance in the youtube video below.

Friday Fun (2/14/2014)

Puppy chow, licorice and balloons for Friday fun on Valentine's Day.

Valentine's Day

Sylvia and Eric spent the first two weeks of February working hard on their Valentines.  They were so proud to pass them out to friends at school.
You're out of this world.

I'm glad we're in the same school.

Sibling pictures are hit and miss at our place and our Valentine's Day picture was a miss (at least if everyone looking at the camera at the same time is what you're going for).  The boys swapped shirts from what they wore last year, and I put Eric in the 24 month one because I didn't think I could get Drake into (and out of) it.  The kids enjoyed getting Valentine's Day cards from Grandma and Grandpa and special balloons from Nana and Papa.
